"Escape from Slavery"

This is a proposed idea for a tapestry. It is a colored pencil drawing from reading a biography of a young black man, Francis Bok, escaping from slavery in Sudan in 1986.

I was extremely moved by his book and his frightening beginning at 10 being captured and taken as a prisoner and slave from a local market where he was selling peanuts and eggs for his mother. After ten years of slavery, isolation, beatings and repeated courages attempts to escape, he finally does.

His journey was extrordinary and I wanted to capture his experiences, his family and village before the capture, to his final departure to America where he lives now.
